Roopkund Lake Trek ( The Mystery Lake)

Roopkund is situated in Chamoli district of Garhwal Himalayas. Roopkund is situated at a height of 5029m in the lap of Trishul massif. This area is usually called is the ‘mystery lake’, since human skeletons and remains of horses from the Paleolithic age were found here.

The skeletons are over 500 years old and various theories have been proposed as to the calamity which must have deposited them there. Some theories says that these skeletons are from those pilgrimage peoples who was going to Homekund to pay homage to the Goddess Nanda Devi, while crossing the precipitous bank above the lake, the pilgrims evidently lost their footing, and as a result of a nasty avalanche as early as in the 14th century the whole unfortunate party tumble down into the icy depths of the lake.

The lake is surrounded by rock-strewn glacier and snow clad peaks. The trek of Roopkund passes through lush green grassy land and conifer forest clining into the slope of hills. Bedni bugyal and Bagubasa are the most beautiful places in this trek.
